IMO Classification of Dangerous Goods

    For maritime transport these goods, materials or articles are classified and further divided as follows

    IMO Class Description
    Class 1 Explosives
    1.1 Substances and articles which have a mass explosion hazard.
    Ex : Black Powder, Nitroglycerine(Desensitized), Dynamite, Most Types of Torpedoes, Mercury Fulminate
    1.2 Substances and articles which have a projection hazard but not a mass explosion hazard.
    Ex : Fireworks, Some types of Detonating Fuses, Some types of Ammunition
    1.3 Substances and articles which have a fire hazard and either a minor blast hazard or a minor projection hazard or both but not a mass explosion hazard.
    Ex : Sodium Picramate, Some Liquid and Solid Propellants, and Some Rocket Motors.
    1.4 Substances and articles which present no significant hazard.
    Ex : Common Fireworks, Toy Caps, Empty Primed Grenades, and Some Small Arms Ammunition
    1.5 Very insensitive substances which have a mass explosion hazard.
    Ex : E Blasting Agents, Some Type B Blasting Agents, and Very Insensitive Explosive Substances
    1.6 Extremely insensitive articles which do not have a mass explosion hazard.
    Class 2 Gases: Compressed Liquefied or Dissolved under Pressure
    2.1 Flammable gases
    Ex : Certain Aerosols, Starting Fluids, Butane, Propane, Acetylene, Hydrogen and Cigarette Lighters
    2.2 Non-Flammable gases
    Ex : Oxygen, Nitrogen, Neon
    2.3 Toxic gases
    Ex : Fluorine, Chlorine, Hydrogen Cyanide.
    Class 3 Flammable Liquids
      Ex : Diethyl Ether, Carbon Disulfide, Petrol, Acetone, Kerosene.
    Class 4 Flammable Solids or Substances
    4.1 Flammable solids
    Ex : Nitrocellulose, Magnesium.
    4.2 Substances liable to spontaneous combustion
    Ex : Aluminum Alkyls, White Phosphorus.
    4.3 Substances which in contact with water emit flammable gases.
    Ex : Sodium, Calcium, Potassium.
    Class 5 Oxidizing Substances (agents) and Organic Peroxides
    5.1 Oxidizing substances (agents) by yielding oxygen increase the risk and intensity of fire
    Ex : Calcium Hypochlorite, Ammonium Nitrate, Hydrogen Peroxide.
    5.2 Organic peroxides - most will burn rapidly and are sensitive to impact or friction
    Ex : Benzoyl Peroxides, Cumene Hydro Peroxide.
    Class 6 Toxic and infectious Substances
    6.1 Toxic substances
    Ex : Potassium Cyanide, Mercuric Chloride, Hydrofluoric Acid.
    6.2 Infectious substances
    Ex : Virus Cultures, Pathology Specimens, Used Intravenous Needles.
    Class 7 Radioactive Substances
      Ex : Uranium, Plutonium.
    Class 8 Corrosives
      Ex : Sulfuric Acid, Hydrochloric Acid, Potassium Hydroxide, Sodium Hydroxide.
    Class 9 Miscellaneous dangerous substances and articles (Marine pollutants which are not of an otherwise dangerous nature are listed in class 9)Flammable Liquids
      Ex : Asbestos, Air-Bag Inflators, Self Inflating Life Rafts, Dry Ice.
    MHB Materials hazardous only in bulk (The regulations for materials hazardous only in bulk are not applicable to these materials when they are carried in closed freight containers however many precaution may have to be observed
